Chelation Therapy & Chronic Fatigue

Looking back on it now, I don’t know why I was so upset. It was merely another step in my recovery journey. I guess at the time it felt like my life was over…

When “Dr. Jordan” suggested testing me for heavy metals, I assumed the results would be negative. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to do the test. We could cross that off the list of possibilities and move on to the next thing. By now, I knew I had Chronic Fatigue and I knew that while the pH Miracle treatment protocol had helped me tremendously, there was still a missing piece in my recovery puzzle. But finding out that the mercury, cadmium, arsenic and lead levels in my body were off the charts had not been part of my plan.

First I had a good cry in my car outside Dr. Jordan’s office. How could something else be wrong? It was mid-2007 and I’d gone from believing that I was one step away from complete recovery to discovering that I needed to start a completely new healing journey. I now realize that heavy metals are just one set of many kinds of toxicities that the human body cannot properly process when it has been shut down by CFS/FMS.

Meanwhile, I had created a private blog which I had not been able to keep up after a few weeks (so clearly I’m better now than I was then). However one of my cousins read what I did manage to write and decided to fly to California from West Africa. When I wrote about what happened whenever I walked too far – objects I was walking towards would start to look like they were moving further away and I suddenly couldn’t speak or command my limbs – I think she realized the seriousness of my condition.

Idunnu ended up coming with me to the follow-up appointment with Dr. Jordan where I was to learn the required chelation therapy. We laughed when the new protocol included eating three ounces of organic meat three times a week! (I hadn’t eaten meat for years.) Dr. Jordan explained that a research study which followed the chelation therapy results of three groups of patients showed that the group which ate a little meat got the best results. The scientists had concluded that meat triggered a certain state in the liver which then responded more efficiently to chelation.

The term chelation therapy set off alarm bells for some of my friends. From a distance, it must have looked as if the pH Miracle protocol hadn’t worked and now chelation therapy was one step too far down quackery road! But for me, Dr. Young’s work has provided a sound, nutritional basis for my recovery. Even in 2007, I had become more functional. I was reading, getting out of bed every morning and the pain and swelling in my body were much reduced.

I experienced chelation therapy as a super deep detox. You swallow a chelating agent (DMSA) which binds the heavy metals in your system and then you help your body get rid of the bound heavy metals with diet, supplements, magnesium injections, infrared heat and colon hydrotherapy. Oh my God, colon hydrotherapy? Ugh! But Dr. Jordan insisted it was necessary and I was determined to get better. So, on with the show!

Ten weeks later, I could think again. My brain was making connections! I felt silly when I expressed this to Dr. Jordan but he told me other patients had described the same experience. Apparently it’s due to getting rid of lead from the brain. Also, the swelling in my face was gone. I finished those grueling weeks of chelation depleted but pleased with the results. Then my doctor told me I needed another round to bring the mercury further down. What?!

A lot of drama ensued, some of which I’ve already written about. Ultimately, another doctor asked me to stop for at least a month before going any further. It was at this time that I began Classical Acupuncture thinking that it would help me return to the second round of chelation therapy.

Almost four years on, I think the second round ship has sailed! I am so grateful chelation therapy helped me regain use of my mind. However, if some heavy metal levels are still too high in my system, I’m going to have to rely on my body handling that naturally as it continues to heal.

Thank you chelation therapy. And goodbye!

  1. Thanks for telling about this….can you elaborate on what you meant when you wrote that chelation therapy left you depleted? Did that show up on blood tests in terms of other deficiencies? I understand that chelating heavy metals often means other minerals can be chelated as well, and that is one of the dangers of chelation therapy. Or were you just tired of the other parts of the chelation approach, like the colonics?
It would be helpful to know exactly why you don’t want to do a second round, especially after experiencing what sounds like rather dramatic, and positive improvement from the experience.

    • This is such a good question! I suspect answering will make the post itself clearer.

First of all, one of the prescribed supplements I took every day during chelation therapy was designed to replace the desired minerals which get chelated along with the heavy metals (http://www.thorne.com/Products/Detoxification/Environmental_Toxicity/prd~SF795.jsp).

When my doctor asked me to do another round, we did a number of tests first to see where I was. Those tests led to my being told I might have liver or bone cancer. One explanation for unusual test results was that my sensitive liver was catching up with all the work it had been given by the chelation therapy and this had behaved like a tumour on the tests.

Once all the drama had been cleared up, I just couldn’t do another round. At first, I thought I just needed to get stronger. I felt physically depleted from all the appointments but more importantly in retrospect, my will was depleted. I began to understand why I’d heard someone liken it to chemotherapy (although it’s safe when properly applied). Plus it’s extremely expensive, and not typically covered by insurance in the States.

There seem to be two schools of thought regarding chelation therapy and chronic fatigue. One is that you must keep doing rounds until the heavy metal levels are normal. The other is that nobody really knows what “normal” is with heavy metals and anyway the body will remove them naturally when it is healthy.

I find that most doctors find it difficult to appreciate what it’s like between the moments that I show up in their office with my adrenalin pumping from the effort. In the end, I had to listen to my instincts which I cannot completely explain.

I suspect that doing one round was ideal for me. I don’t think the second round would have produced dramatic improvement in my heavy metal levels like in the first round. I also suspect I got better than average results from the the first round thanks to keeping up my pH Miracle protocol. I’m glad I didn’t have to wait for further recovery before benefiting from the effects of lower lead in my brain for example.
