Day 29 (April 29) – Congratulations
We all know Health Activists are awesome. Share three things you love about yourself, things you’re great at, or just want to share. Don’t undercut or signpost!
I was having a conversation with Doug Lisle, an evolutionary psychologist. “He’s going to think I’m a freak”, I thought to myself. But I decided to tell him what had just occurred to me anyway.
He was saying something about dreams and I told him that I often have these … not quite dreams, more like visions, halfway between being asleep and being awake.
“That means you’re open minded,” Dr. Lisle responded. He went on to explain that people like him – straight-laced, buttoned down people – never have them.
Really? Well then, that would be the number one thing that I’m great at. I would never have listed that here without Dr. Lisle’s objective assessment. In retrospect, I realize that my open-mindedness got me a lot further down the road to recovery than I might otherwise have gotten.
The second thing that I’m great at is working through complex problems. Like many gifts, this is a double-edged sword. If I hadn’t been good at working around the issues created by my increasing fatigue, maybe I would have pulled the emergency cord long before my body had completely shut down.
Third and last, I’m great at facing the truth. It’s not for the faint of heart! I’m learning to choose which truth to make a priority (one at a time!) and to accept when people aren’t ready to face something (myself included). It’s about truth with compassion, including compassion for myself. We’re all works in progress and as I’ve heard Jane Fonda say, it’s about wholeness not perfection.
