Behind the Scenes of this Blog Challenge

When this HAWMC (pronounced HA-mick apparently) participant decided to write these 30 posts in thirty days, she had just arrived in London. The plan is to complete recovery from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with the help of The Optimum Health Clinic.

Signing up for the blog challenge has only made the process of settling into a new city on a new continent even harder. I don’t even have my desktop computer with me; it’s being shipped from San Francisco. So these posts are basically produced by pushing my iPad (and myself) to the hilt. All this hassle, yet no regrets. I am loving this challenge!

The Things We Forget

20120420-193241.jpg

Once upon a time, I couldn’t get out of bed no matter how hard I tried, until about 5pm. The first time I got out of bed at 3pm, I made phone calls to celebrate! I no longer have that difficulty. Not physically anyway. Instead I wake up and feel overwhelmed by the day. Then it becomes hard to get up for … emotional reasons.

A similar thing happened with showering. At the beginning of CFS, I would power through it but I often ran out of strength in the middle which created all kinds of problems. Showers aren’t physically that hard anymore. But it seems the experience from the past left a neural pattern behind in my brain that says, “Danger! Don’t get in that shower!!”  Continue reading

Health Madlib Poem

20120420-024158.jpg

Mad Libs (from ad lib, a spontaneous improvisation) is a phrasal template word game where one player prompts another for a list of words to substitute for blanks in a story, usually with funny results. Wikipedia

joyously i have never immunized, chronically beyond

by Bola Odulate and E. E. Cummings

joyously i have never immunized, chronically beyond
any syndrome, your depletion has its myalgia:
in your most weary prescriptions are things which free me,
or which i cannot hike because they are too fatiguing

your immune look spiritually will unset me
though i have energized myself as pH,
you hug always, miracle by miracle, myself, as exercise loves
(pooping calmly, emotionally) her healing rebounder

Miracle Cure

A Medical Cure for Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia. Finally!

******WARNING. This is a fake news article. WARNING******

“It’s a miracle,” Sage said. “I’m sleeping easily, deeply every night then waking up rested and refreshed. And I’m not taking any of the nine prescriptions and supplements I used to need to get any sleep at all.”

Over the last two weeks, this reporter has heard similar comments from many former Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia patients across California. “I can take care of my children again.” Or, “I have gotten out of bed every morning for the last month, done the things I chose to do, gone to sleep and then happily woken up the next day to do it all again.” And, “My body is pain-free and flexible again. I’ve missed yoga!”

5 Dinner Guests

20120417-150144.jpg

The story of the five people I’d like to have dinner with, living or dead, is about the different aspects of life I want to experience through them. This is a tall order because I don’t just want to learn, I want to have a ton of fun!

So once my five guests are seated, I would start by asking M. Scott Peck for the best way that we might come together as a community for the evening. He may suggest taking turns having each person say something on their mind, in a non-judgmental space. No responses, we all just listen to each other. After multiple rounds for about half an hour, Oprah Winfrey might giggle in the delicious, supportive air we’ve just created and ask, “What is your intention tonight Bola? What would you like to see happen?”  Continue reading

Open a Book

20120416-232825.jpg

I grabbed the book and looked away. Then I opened a random page and touched my index finger to the paper. The phrase closest to my fingertip was “… are both enormously vulnerable.” An image popped into my mind and my shoulders slumped. “Oh no.”

At a certain point during my recovery journey, I shared a home with a friend of a friend for a few months. In between screaming meltdowns over say, my having one guest in a month, or threatening to call the police and tell them I was trespassing, there were moments of sudden sweetness. “Shall I make you some tea?” she once asked, seconds after a shocking threat.

Pin 1

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS). Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia Syndrome (CFS/FMS). Fibromyalgia.

Whatever the name or manifestation, I believe that its patients are canaries in the coal mine of our planetary future. They’re here to warn of the crisis that current environmental abuse, inhuman pace of life and the neglect/misunderstanding of emotional health will bring, if we don’t change course. But I’m optimistic about our ability to respond. And I’m committed to doing my part.  Continue reading

Writing with Style

20120413-203745.jpg

Writing is essentially a midwifing process for me. In each case, a post is born. Other than that, each one happens differently. Sometimes, I just have to figure out the first sentence. Then I type it straight into my blogging software and after that my fingers just keep moving. Next thing you know, I have a post.

Other times, I plan a series. What do I want to say? How many posts do I need? Then it’s weeks of automatic writing.  Continue reading

10 Things I Couldn’t Live Without

Last month I did an experiment. Can I take a break from my greens for maybe a day? I was at Whole Foods when I hit the wall. Hard. I thought, What’s going on? I haven’t felt this bad in ages! Then I remembered the experiment and ordered some freshly made green vegetable juice. You wouldn’t believe how quickly I began to feel better.

So the number one thing I can’t live without is greens! A.k.a. green vegetable juice, or green vegetable powder in alkaline waterContinue reading
